Connect Cisco Router With Usb Console Cable

Proceed with the steps to connect Cisco router with USB console cable.

Step 1: Connecting the USB console cable

Before setting up the Belkin router in the Access Point mode, configure its wireless settings using the steps given below.

  • You will need a console cable that has RJ45 port on one end and serial db9 port on the other end.
  • Plug the console cable in to an adapter that has a USB port on the other end.
  • Connect the USB cable to your Windows computer or laptop.
  • Plug in the RJ45 end of the console cable to the right port on your Cisco router.

Step 2: Download the USB Console driver

Perform the instructions given below to enable the Access Point mode in the Belkin router.

  • Go to the official Cisco website to download the driver.
  • Navigate to the Support page and download the USB Console driver for the Cisco router.

Step 3: Opening Device Manager.

  • Make sure to turn on your Cisco router.
  • Press the Windows + R buttons together to launch the Run dialog box.
  • Type “devmgmt.msc” in the Search section. Then, press the Enter key.
  • When the Device Manager window appears, you can view the connected cable in the Ports section.
  • In case the port is COM 1, enter the serial line as COM 1 in the Putty Configuration window.

Step 4: Consoling the Cisco router with Putty

  • Press the Start menu and type Putty in the Search section.
  • Select a Putty application to run the Putty Configuration window.
  • Enter your serial line and click the Open button. Then, press the Enter key.
  • When the Initial Configuration dialog box appears, type No.
  • Press the Enter key once the consoling process is complete.

Step 5: Updating Driver

  • If the consoling process fails, go to the Device Manager window.
  • Select Ports and change the USB Serial port to the Cisco serial.
  • Right-click on the USB Serial Port and select the Properties option from the list.
  • Navigate to the Driver section and click Update Driver.
